South Coast Rail chugs along on impact studies, director says

In the past seven months, studies regarding noise impact, crossings and public safety; and environmental impact studies on water quality, environmental justice and coastal development management are finished, project director Jean Fox said.

Project planners with the Army Corps of Engineers, in what Fox described as a “slow and laborious effort,” continue to work with local American Indian tribes in a federally mandated archaeological and resource review of the entire length of the proposed rail system.

Studies on the environmental impact on rare species and wetlands, and an operation simulation that charts train scheduling are almost finished, Fox said.

 Earlier, Fox told the Herald News the rail project is “the spine for economic development” for communities along the proposed rail line.
